The Girl Who Slept with God by Val Brelinski
Review by Tiffany Quay Tyson

When thirteen-year-old Jory’s sister Grace returns from a mission trip to Mexico claiming to be pregnant with the child of God, their ultra-religious father hides the girls away in a house on the edge of town. Jory is uprooted from her Christian school and sent to a rural public school where the youth culture of 1970s America is just beginning to make itself known. Set in Arco, Idaho, The Girl Who Slept with God is a touching coming-of-age tale from debut novelist Val Brelinski.

I picked up Brelinski’s book just before a road trip to promote my own book. It was an excellent choice. Brelinski tells a good story and she portrays her characters with both extraordinary sympathy and unstinting honesty. Perhaps it is Brelinski’s own childhood experiences as the daughter of devout evangelical Christian parents in Idaho that lends this story such authenticity, but it is her clear, compassionate voice that makes them so likeable. Even Grip, the mysterious ice cream man who befriends Jory and then Grace, is spared from becoming completely creepy as he spends too much time with a young teen girl. In fact, I found myself rooting for Grip at various points in the story. A lesser author might have made Grip purely sinister, but Brelinski gives him depth. She does the same with Jory’s father, Oren, who makes a series of baffling decisions in an effort to hide his family’s shame from the religious community. Thanks to Brelinski, we understand he loves his daughters. He just doesn’t know how to treat them.

Grace’s and Jory’s youngest sister, Frances, does not play a huge role in this story, but I found myself worrying about her most of all. Grace’s fate seems pre-determined and Jory is such a resilient young woman, it’s clear she will weather adversity. But young Frances, who spends too much time with her depressed and heavily medicated mother, seems altogether too young and innocent for the things her family endures. It is rare that I find myself caring so deeply for a character on the fringes of a story, but Brelinski doesn’t allow any character to play a marginal role. It’s admirable how she makes each character, each scene, and each sentence matter so much.

The Girl Who Slept with God is a funny, tragic, breathtakingly human story about a complicated family. I can’t wait to read what Brelinski writes next.
