I joined Feature & Follow again this week hosted by Parajunkee & Alison Can Read. Each week they pose a question to discuss, bloggers link up and follow each other and the featured blogger that week. Easy enough? Here we go.

If you are visiting me for the first time, Welcome!! I’m Tanya and enjoy reading classics, historical fiction, world fiction, literary fiction, non-fiction…ok well I like most anything.  Please follow me via email or Bloglovin and I will return the favor.  Hope you browse around and share your thoughts with me.

This week’s question is:

Q: Have you broken up with a series? If so which one and why?

I started out reading Chick Lit books because I needed light-hearted reads. I saw the Confessions of a Shopaholic movie and thought that would be a fun series to read. I tried it but gave up on it. I found the character a little too flighty and shallow for my taste. Bex made a great movie character but I didn’t enjoy Shopaholic Takes Manhattan and Shopaholic Ties the Knot as much.

I also read In the Woods by Tana French which is the first book in the Dublin Murder Squad series but I was a little too disappointed in the ending to pick up book #2 just yet.

I’ve read the first book in The Hunger Games Series, The Alchemyst Series (The Immortal Nicholas Flamel), The Vampire Chronicles Series (Interview with the Vampire), and The Wicked Series but haven’t gotten to read the second book yet. Guess I need to finish off some series this summer!

Have you abandoned any series you started reading? Have you read any of the series I mentioned? What’d you think? Let me know and as always, happy reading!

Armchair BEA wraps up today and what a fantastic event it has been!

Blogger Shout-Outs. My favorite part of events like these is meeting new-to-me bloggers. Here are some of my favorites that I met or got to know better this week:

1. Lexxie at Unconventional Book Reviews for great discussion, her recommendation and support for using the Ultimate Book Blogger Plugin and I enjoy reading her reviews on books outside my usual genres. I won her giveaway of 3 Paulo Coehlo books and I can’t wait to read them! Thanks Lexxie!

2. Michael at Literary Exploration for bringing up a good point about writing negative reviews. He enjoys classics, cultural books and has a great list for the 1001 books to read before you die on one of his pages. He mentions in his wrapup he was looking to connect with other male book bloggers, not sure how many he found but Adam at Roof Beam Reader is great too.

3. Julie and Rose at Chapter Breakfor their unique blog design and I like their tag team approach. They have lots of giveaways and have introduced me to some new-to-me books.

4. Lisa at Lit and Life since she blogs about both books and family life and is a member of the Classics Club. I like that she takes part in a Pin It and Do It Challenge. As much as I stalk Pinterest for recipes and have tried out a number of them, I totally want to do that. Can I? It’d be my first non-reading challenge!

5. Kim at Bookmark to Blog. She hosts the Monthly Keyword Challenge that I have been doing but I enjoyed conversing more with her this week. She wrote a great post about being true to yourself which was spot on and a great reminder for new and veteran bloggers alike. I won her giveaway for a Women’s Prize for Fiction book and chose Where’d You Go, Bernadette? I can’t wait to read it, thanks Kim!

Cheerleading! Yay!
I was a cheerleader and visited over 100 blogs and commented on at least 45 a day (which is why I haven’t had a chance yet to respond to those of you that stopped by but…I will!) It was great filling up my Bloglovin and email with all these blog subscriptions of new-to-me bloggers. I look forward to discussing great books with many of you.

Post Recap
I posted more this week and actually kept up with the agenda. I was so excited to write about the various topics that I could not pass up the opportunity to share my thoughts.

Day 1 – Introduction – Get to Know Me! and Classic Literature Recommendations.
Day 2 – Blog Development and Best Books Read in 2013 by Genre. This was one of my favorite days getting ideas from other bloggers on ways to improve our blogs.
Day 3 – Giveaway Day and Books that won my Thanks for Changing My Life Awards. Each phenomenal in their own ways, changing my perceptions and making me appreciate the life and blessings I have.
Day 4 – Ethics and Non-Fiction Books. Ethics was another great discussion topic.
Day 5 – Keeping motivated, keeping it “real” and my kids’ book recommendations
And finally today’s wrap up and World Fiction Recommendations

I will definitely be participating in this event again. It was more than I usually post in a week but I felt like they were great discussion topics. The one suggestion I would have for next time is to post the full set of discussion prompts on the agenda so we can better prepare our posts. On the day where I posted the books that changed my life, the agenda said to talk about books that changed our lives and then on the link-up there were other questions I would have liked to weigh in on. It would help people like me schedule our posts better. But that’s a minor thing and overall I thought it was well organized and a lot of fun. I really liked the Behind the Scenes posts inside the BEA and pictures from the actual event. I so would’ve loved to be there for the Capstone Young Readers display, it was covered in our favorite Justice League superheroes encouraging kids to read, we love the Justice League AND reading in this house!

Thanks to all the organizers for a fantastic and phenomenal event, you’ve got a fan in me! See ya next time and till then around the blogosphere.

*****World Fiction Recommendations*****

I saw Becca at Lost in Books wrote her recommendations in world fiction, a genre that was not specifically addressed during the Armchair BEA. I love reading about other cultures and journeying around the world through a book and decided to give you my recommendations as well.  For more books I read as part of my Around the World in 80 Books Challenge and a map of the places I’ve traveled to through books, click here.

Armchair BEA asks participants to discuss today:

Are you wondering just how you’ll be able to keep all this going? Today, we’re interested in knowing how you address that question, especially if you’ve been doing this for a while. If you have been around for years, how do you keep your material fresh? How do you continue to keep blogging fun? How do you not only grow an audience, but how do you keep them coming back for more? Think about it, post about it, link to it, and read about how other bloggers are keeping it real, fresh, and fun. Maybe we can inspire each other today!

1. Take it one day at a time. I try to not pressure myself in posting content everyday. I appreciate greatly the time and hard work it takes to keep up a blogThe only way I am going to keep up blogging is if it continues to be fun. Normally, I will post twice or three times a week and spend the other days promoting the posts, commenting on other blogs and networking with other bloggers. It may not be the same days every week and while I wish I could schedule posts and be consistent, it’s just not possible when I deal with the unpredictability of 3 kids and a chronic illness. I just appreciate the small victory of blogging when I can and do.

2. A big, bad notebook of my blog ideas. Keeping material fresh is tough but I’m so scatterbrained and going in a million directions at once that brainstorming blog post ideas is not the hard part for me. Lately I blog mostly about books, but there are other topics on my blog that I discuss like sharing my reviews of our favorite recipes, discussing my experiences with Rheumatoid Arthritis and how I try to stay positive and other helpful tools I discover to make life easier.

Need help brainstorming ideas? I’m not sure if Melissa will start the class up again but attending the Content Brew class was one of the best things I’ve done to get my ideas flowing. Now I have too many ideas and not enough time to write posts on each one. I love MomComm, consider following her blog for ideas on how to improve your blog. I’ve want to buy her DIY blog ctritique book and she has a Blog Design for dummies book in the works. I bet those would give me a long list of things to work on and update on my blog!

3. Event participation. I struggle with growing number of followers to subscribe. Participating in events like these certainly help spike my numbers temporarily. I’m a sucker for book blogging events, read-a-thons and blogathons where I can meet new bloggers. Following them doesn’t always earn me a follow back but if I keep up with #4 then I hope that one day they’ll return the follow. Check out my Blogging Events Calendar for other events coming up, there’s always a read-a-thon going on in the blogosphere and I’ve tried to highlight the ones I want to sign up for.

4. Commenting to keep conversation going. I love, love, love visiting and leaving comments on other bloggers pages and I’ve signed up to be a commenting cheerleader for both this event and Dewey’s. While I could just write that I stopped by to say hi, I think it’s more effective to leave a comment where I ask them a question to keep the conversation going so they reply to the comment. I also leave a link to a post of mine that I think they might find interesting to help them return the visit if they don’t have WordPress/commentluv turned on.

5. CommentLuv and Comment reply notification. If you are on WordPress, get the plugins for CommentLuv and Comment reply notification or figure out if you can do this on Blogger. CommentLuv allows the commenter to include their recent post in the comment. It helps me visit you back! Comment reply notification sends an email to someone who posts a comment when I reply. It helps keep the conversation going and I love hearing back. If I don’t know that my comment has a reply on your blog, I will forget where I commented or think that maybe blogger didn’t have anything else to say.

How do you keep your ideas fresh? How do you keep organized? How do you stay motivated to keep blogging? I’d love to hear from you!

******Children’s Picture Books******

Oh here we go, I love to read, my kids love to read. With 3 kids in 3 different age groups, a preschooler, elementary schooler and middle schooler, we have the realm of children’s books covered.

Our favorite picture books, good for preschoolers and elementary schoolers, click on picture to take you to description in Goodreads:

grumpy santa   grovermouse cookiewocket

We also love reading the McDuff stories that features a Westie like our Pebbles and Snowball, Curious George, Thomas the Train and just about any book containing a Disney, Scooby Doo character in it.

My middle graders favorite series (besides Harry Potter and Hunger Games which he loves too), click on picture to take you to description in Goodreads:

I could go on and on about the books my kids and I enjoy, trips to the library are fun for all of us and usually we can’t escape from there in less than an hour.

What books do your kids enjoy? Especially middle graders, my oldest needs some suggestions of books to read, he’s read so much! I’d love to hear from you, and as always, happy reading!

As we have been discussing blog development with the Armchair BEA this week and increasing number of followers, I thought it was high time I joined in on Feature & Follow hosted by Parajunkee & Alison Can Read.

Q: What blogger would you most like to meet in real life? Tell us about him or her.

I would love to meet Jennifer from The Relentless Reader. She is truly relentless in her reading and blogging. She’s usually already read what I have, is always posting new content on the most interesting books and is responsible for growing my TBR exponentially. Her reviews usually make me laugh with the crazy gifs she finds and the reviews are well-written and concise. She’s also great at networking and commenting on blogs with meaningful and supportive comments. I don’t know how she does it all and manages a family, but I’d sure like to know!

We seem to have a lot in common with the books we enjoy reading and I think we could have quite a lively discussion if we ever met in real life. Click on her button below to be taken to her page.

Armchair BEA is tackling the tough topic of blog ethics today, making sure bloggers know the rules and ethics behind their actions. I try to err on the cautious side, I give credit where it’s due and make sure that I write my book “reviews” before I really read what others have said about the same novel. Since I still tend to post reviews on books that have been out for awhile, it’s not too often that a bunch of bloggers are posting reviews on the same books as I and at the same time.

Since I can’t claim to know all the rules, I be sure to scope it out from people who seem to know. Here are some of my favorite resources that help guide me and my blog:

Ashley from Nose Graze hosts the Bitchin Book Blog. Every week she tackles ways to improve your blog. I especially found this post about Why Not to Use Images Straight from Goodreads. I thought I was giving proper credit by linking to Goodreads but Ashley gives several reasons why that’s not the case.

The whole question about the FTC guidelines and how it applies to book bloggers who accept review copies still baffles me. I liked Felicia from the Geeky Bloggers Book Blog’s compilation of the guidelines and helpful articles to help us decipher what to do. I still am not sure how to handle FTC, anyone have a simple yes/no solution for me? No? {cricket, cricket, as my son would say}.

Kathleen, hostess of The Biannual Blogathon Bash, SMS Nonfiction Book Reviews, and a couple other blogs is an amazing resource. As a Blogathon Bash participant, I belong to the Facebook group she created and she welcomes questions to help us with anything blogging. If I don’t know, I’ll ask her advice.

*****Non-Fiction*****

Do you read non-fiction? Well, in the past year, I actually have enjoyed more non-fiction. I mainly listen to them as audiobooks for the time being. I had a long commute to work and I found personal productivity non-fiction motivating to help me gather my focus on the way to work. That being said, I’ve also listened to my share of humorous memoir non-fiction. There are quite a few non-fiction I’ve read and haven’t posted a review on yet because I keep meaning to sign up for Michelle’s Non-fiction Adventure 5-year reading challenge. I’ve had my hand written list for about 3 months now, just gotta type it up and post it!

Some of the non-fiction I have read/listened to recently but not reviewed yet:

The Bedwetter by Sarah Silverman, 2*
Bitter is the New Black by Jen Lancaster, 4*
The Geography of Bliss: One Grump’s Search for the Happiest Places in the World, 4*
3rd Generation and Beyond by Danna Pycher, 3.5*
I Just Want to Pee Alone by “Some Kick-Ass Mom Bloggers, 4*

My upcoming non-fiction reads:

Driving over Lemons by Chris Stewart
7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey
Make Today Count by John Maxwell
Devil in the White City by Erik Larson

I really have liked non-fiction that either makes me laugh, helps me focus on small victories and positive aspects of my life or helps me be a better or more productive parent.

Do you enjoy non-fiction? What are your favorite non-fiction books? What resources do you turn to when figuring out what the right thing to do is for your blog? As always; happy reading!
