It’s Monday, What are You Reading? May 13, 2013
It’s Monday, What are you Reading? is a meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journey to recap what I finished reading last week, what I am currently reading and other book-related news. Bloggers link up their lists and it’s a great way to get new book recommendations, discuss our thoughts on the books we’ve read and meet new bloggers. It’s a great start to the week.
Last week I Finished Reading
Interview with The Vampire by Anne Rice. My first Anne Rice novel and I’d been warned that she’s dark and dramatic. I actually really loved this story. The narrating vampire, Louis, is not a vampire by choice and struggles between his vampire and human identities. Louis is up against the vampire who turns him, LeStat, who seems to be his polar opposite, a violent vampire who enjoys the kill. Full review coming soon.
3rd Generation and Beyond by Danna Pycher. Ms. Pycher’s grandparents were Holocaust survivors and throughout their most devastating experiences, came to appreciate life as beautiful. Ms. Pycher writes about valuable life lessons learned inspired by her grandparents. A fast, easy and powerfully uplifting read. Full review coming soon.
This Week I’m Reading
Girl with a Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier. Paperback for my in-person book club, a fictional account of the woman that inspired a painting.
Great Gastby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Audiobook for my Classics Club, the story of the love lorn millionaire Gatsby and an interesting cast of characters. The book immerses the reader in a different, specatular age and Gatsby sure knows how to love it up. I love Fitzgerald’s portrayal of Daisy (the woman Gatsby longs for) and her mesmerizing voice. The book certainly makes me want to watch the movie.
I Just Want to Pee Alone by Some Kick Ass Mom Bloggers (yep, that’s what the cover says). Kindle version. In honor of Mother’s Day and because every mom has probably thought “I just want to pee alone” at some point in their motherhood. Hilarious and relatable essays by various mom bloggers covering all kinds of embarassing situations.
Other book-related events and news:
Well, enough about me, what about you? What are you reading this week? Are you participating in the Bout of Books? Leave me a link with your goals! I’d love to hear from you! As always, happy reading!
LOLOLOL – “I just want to Pee Alone”… I had a lot of privacy loss when my kids were little. Got a lot of it back, especially bathroom privacy when they were older…. However. Once the grandchildren were born, and especially while doing the potty training thing, I lost the bathroom privacy once again… So I can totally relate. Now they are five and six, and I am getting some of the privacy back. (thank goodness!) They even LAUGH while teasing me that I can’t have any privacy in the bathroom. The little devils. 😉
Except for the bathroom privacy book, (ahem) you seem to have quite some intense reads listed this week. I STILL haven’t been able to finish an Ann Rice novel – they are just too bleak for me. or at least to me, they read as bleak. shrugs.
Have a great week!
I’ve been thinking about reading The Great Gatsby. I read many, many years ago. I want to see the movie, but I’d like to read the book again.
I really enjoyed it and look fwd to watching the movie. From the trailer I think Daisy’s voice is appropriately mesmerizing. Thanks for stopping by Yvonne!
I’ve been meaning to read Interview with the Vampire, especially with Yen Press having a graphic novel based on it. I’m excited read your full review and hear your thoughts on it.
Interview with a Vampire was my first Anne Rice book too.
I haven’t read Ann Rice but that one does sound good. I chose to read Dracula and didn’t enjoy it, I should try this one.
Look like some good books! I just finished reading Argo and am going to start The Golem and the Jinni. 🙂
Thanks Rebecca! And wanted to say thanks too for including me on your “Fab Book Blogs” page! I found myself on it today and it was a nice surprise. I really need to update my Blogs I love page too for all the bookish blogs I heartily follow these days, including yours 🙂 Happy Bout of Books!
I’m going to be reading Firefly Lane by Kristen Hannah and Rump: The true story of Rumpelstilkin by Liesl Shurriff this week for Bout of Books. My update will be up tomorrow.
oooh Firefly Lane is one of our upcoming book club books 🙂 Given that I enjoyed Wicked (for the most part, review coming soon) and the “bad guy”‘s side of the story, I bet I would enjoy The True Story of Rumpelstiltskin. Enjoy your reading Rachael and thanks for stopping by!
Ah, two books that have been on my TBR for ages: Girl with the Pearl Earring and Interview with the Vampire. I really need to get around to those!!
That book by the mom bloggers sounds hilarious…definitely checking that out!!
The mom bloggers book is funny. I got it on a Kindle deal for $5 one day and can’t beat it for some totally relatable humor. We’ve all been there! Hope you enjoy your reading this week Kelly, thanks as always for stopping by!
I remember the movie Interview with a Vampire, Tom Cruise,Brad Pitt and Kirsten Dunst so I’m wondering if the book is as good or better, must check it out, you have some other good reads there, enjoy !
Hi Ruth, I think I fell asleep during the Interview with the Vampire movie when it first came out so I totally didn’t remember a thing about it, including that Kirsten Dunst was in it. Was she Claudia? I suppose I will need to watch it again as much as I enjoyed the book. Thanks for stopping by and hope you enjoy our reading this week too!
I really love your list. I read the Vampire series years ago-love them! Hope you enjoy Gatsby-one of my favorites! You have a beautiful blog-thanks.
Hi Kerri, thanks so much for the compliment and glad you enjoyed these books too! Going to stop by and see what you’re up to reading this week. Enjoy!
You have such good stuff coming up 🙂 Yay!
It was years and years and years before I could pee alone, lol. My baby is 13 so it’s a bit easier now! 😉
lol….ahhh…to pee alone, small victories:) Please tell me I don’t have to wait another 10 years till I can pee alone!
Sigh, I would like to pee alone one day!
Have a great reading week

Good luck with your goals!
Thanks Kai!
I loved Girl With a Pearl Earring – it’s been years since I read it! I just finished up The Why of Things and am starting on The Rebellion of Miss Lucy Ann Lobdell. Oh, and of course, A Train in Winter.
Yea, I’m a few years behind in reading, I gotta lot of great books to catch up on! Hope you and the book club are enjoying a Train in Winter. I didn’t get on board for this book club, hopefully the next one!
The Girl With a Pearl Earring is one of my favorites! Have you seen The Gatsby movie yet? I wanted to see it for Mother’s Day, but then I ran out of time. 🙁
Glad to hear you enjoyed Girl with a Pearl Earring Holly, I’ve yet to find anyone who does not enjoy it. I have not seen the movie yet, prefer to read the book first. Hope you get to see the movie soon.
How are you liking the Pee Alone book?? Did you skip straight to page 146??!! 😉 Can’t wait to hear what you think!-The Dose Girls
I tried to resist the urge to skip straight to page 146 because of course I’m saving the best for last! You all crack me up and can’t wait to read what you wrote. I am enjoying it, it’s laugh out loud funny and I think it’s perfect to read on Mother’s Day!
