Taking the 2012 Goodreads Challenge

Over the past few months I have been trying to “unplug” more and read before bed to help me sleep.  A couple small victories for me…not only has it worked like a charm in helping me get to sleep sooner and sounder, it has cultivated my love for reading good books.

Some friends of mine who are avid readers belonged to Goodreads so I signed up. I love the site (and the app) where I can see what my friends and other readers are reading, rate and review books I have read and get recommendations for books I might enjoy.  I also love that I can use my smartphone to scan a book’s barcode to add it to my to-read list on the app.  Having the to-read list on the app is great since often times my errands are not planned and just crammed in the 5 minutes I have between Mom’s Taxi stops shuffling kids to activities.  I can quickly access my wish list on my phone and be in and out of the library or store in no time.

For 2012, I signed up for the Goodreads reading challenge where I set my own goal of how many books I can read this year. It’s a lofty goal for me at about a book a week and I started out well but have a little catching up to do from not reading the past couple weeks. I don’t have the time to dedicate to a book club so this is as close as I will get for now. Fifty books in a year maybe more than I have read for fun in my lifetime but I’m gonna make it!

My oldest son, Einstein, is an avid reader so I signed him up for an account too.  He, Superhubby and I have a healthy competition going.  Einstein has read nearly twice as many books as I but I have enjoyed our reading time together and he’s actually encouraging his dad and I to read more.  Just another lesson I learn from my amazing little man.

Ten books down and 40 books to go to meet my goal….I am always looking for good books to add to my to read list, what are your good reads? What do your kids enjoy reading?

Happy reading!
